What is "public health"? Many people, unfortunately, feel it is synonymous with "serving the poor". The American Heritage Dictionary defines it as follows:
Public adj. Affecting the community, used by the people or community, acting on behalf of the people or community.
Health n. One’s over all condition, soundness of body or mind, well-being.
While it is true, Southwest District Health does attend to the health needs of low-income individuals and families, we also provide services that have a daily impact on every resident, guest, and visitor of our six-county area regardless of income or social status…and, you don't need an appointment at one of our clinics to reap the benefits of services.

If you have eaten in a restaurant, shopped at a grocery store, eaten the delicacies from the local bakery, or purchased items from a local farmer’s market; eaten a hot dog from a convenience store, at the fair, or an outdoor concert; cooled off in a community swimming pool; taken a sip of water from the tap in your home, a hotel, or a public fountain; enjoyed a community festival; traveled abroad; attended public school; hauled a load of waste to the local landfill; or, installed an on-site septic system at your rural cabin…then you have received public health services from your Southwest District Health team!

Our team is made up of dedicated medical, dental, environmental, and technical professionals, and support staff all working side-by-side as a team toward one common goal: To prevent disease, disability and premature death; To promote healthy lifestyles and protect and promote the health of people and their environment in Adams, Canyon, Gem, Owyhee, Payette, and Washington Counties.

But, we don't do it alone. In addition to the Health District team, Southwest Idaho's public health system is made up of county and city officials, law enforcement, fire and Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) teams, area hospitals, private physicians and dentists, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), schools, and community volunteers.

Now you can define public health in Southwest Idaho: Southwest District Health working with its partners daily to ensure a better quality of life for you and your family.
